About Lindsey Berkson
How hormones direct our reality and physiology has captivated my consciousness. I am a researcher, most often connecting the dots of other folks' research. Three years worth of reading through the hard efforts of hundreds of scientists, along with my 25 years of clinical research, is compiled in Safe Hormones, Smart Women, then put into fun and easy read. I've written three other books on hormones, Hormone Deception being one of the early books to inform the public about the dangers of environmental hormone hijackers. I am a participating Scholar at a science-focused think tank called the Center for Bioenvironmental Research at Tulane and Xavier Universities, which is an international epicenter of research on everything to do with estrogen and our health.

Designing the first natural non-hormonal supplement for women in the early 1980s, led to formulating the first natural nutritional/herbal line for doctors to use in their practices on a wide range of women's health issues. I hosted one of the early talk radio shows on nutrition in the San Francisco Bay Area for almost 5 years. After sharing emergent nutrition news, people would call in to get their health and nutrition questions answered. This led to writing a monthly one-page column in the food and health section of the San Francisco Chronicle, which combined cutting edge health news and comedy. After earning a master's degree in nutrition, I obtained higher certifications in nutrition (American College of Nutrition, American Clinical Board of Nutrition), including a 100-hour course on nutrition and natural medicine at the National College of Naturopathic Medicine. I also graduated from a four-year doctoral program at Western States Chiropractic College.

Over two decades, I lectured to doctors of all backgrounds, including dentists and MDs, for relicensing credit on a wide array of topics related to applying nutrition to clinical practice. This piloted developing and co-inventing multiple nutraceutical lines to address various health issues, from digestive complaints to cystic breasts, with a variety of renowned physicians like Drs. Leo Galland, Jonathan Wright, and Alan Gaby. For years I had the great fortune to practice in a team practice with medical doctors, acupuncturists, psychologists, and nutritionists-the first multi-disciplinary clinic in the country (Center for Orthomolecular Medicine in Palo Alto, CA, headed by the cardiologist Dr. Carl Ebnother, a well-loved mentor).

For the last three decades, my focus has been as a nutritional consultant with a specialty in women and hormones. During this time, I've run nutritional and hormone tests on thousands of women, worked with their doctors, and consulted with them about nutrition, food, and exercise choices. At the same time, I journeyed into related projects, such as working with a physician on a novel patent for bioidentical hormones, developing a new pharmaceutical/herbal combination for dialysis and diabetic patients, and being a health advocate for breast cancer survivors (being one myself from having been a daughter exposed to the drug-DES-in utero). Throughout all these years, the focus has been on research and nutrition, especially endocrinology.

I wrote Hormone Deception, which explored the way environmental influences (like toxic chemicals) upset the hormonal balance of our bodies. Natural Answers for Women's Health is a reference guide on 220 medical conditions, including information on how hormones play a role in the creation and treatment of these conditions. Hormones Aren't Gorillas was a second incarnation of HRT and Hormones Made Simple that was written and sold privately for medical doctors who specialize in women's health to give to their patients. Healthy Digestion the Natural Way highlighted the link between digestion, health, and hormones. Nutrition for Schmoes is a basic easy-to-read primer on everything you need to know about cutting edge nutrition but can read in 20 fun packed minutes.

My first patient in junior clinic in college went on to support a friend and colleague of mine through his death. When she was facing her own 30 years later, I wrote Crossing the Bridgeto help her overcome her fears and make her passing gentle for herself and loved ones. It can be read in 15 minutes and soothes the soul and promotes hopeful peace. When my mother had to go through a series of residences and ended up in a lock-down dementia unit, this inspired My Mother Her Worse Her Purse as a Shoe, to share how to maneuver through the system. With her gerontologist, we created simple, effective exercises and a nutrional program that helped reduce the cognitive decline.

For the past 20 years, I have gone to academic and clinical conferences on hormones-like the noted e.hormone conference that is held at Tulane Medical School, where the top academics meet to share cutting-edge research-and have spoken at many of these conferences, including the 30th anniversary of the first conference on Estrogens and the Environment. I have also lectured for Physicians for Social Responsibility and worked on a diabetes project for the World Health Organization, specifically on the increased risk of diabetes that comes from exposure to environmental toxins, some of them estrogenic pollutants.

As a firm believer in the perspective that complete health addresses the total person, it's essential to find out that which we "don't know" that's "got us". It's critical to find out which nutrient deficiencies are keeping us from total health, as well as what emotions we are hiding or have unknown hold over life interactions. Nutrients and hormones aren't enough to keep us vibrant. Tools for attitudinal and emotional house cleaning and refueling are a must. Having a degree in psychology, along with studying relationships and religious philosophies for decades, marbled with meditation, being a yoga teacher, living in an Ashram for 5 years with Swami Satchitananda, and having lived in India studying body/mind/spirit aspects of health- has birthed 2 other books (as well as influenced the voice of all these works). The Big Bang Theory of Love-why is love so hard, tips on how to soften love and make it stay and Juicy Souls-how we give our spirits away and how to get them back are about the emotional/spiritual side of our journey. The fun graphics download complex ideas fast and easy, to make quick but helpful reads.

I hope you enjoy this body of work and feel free to email me how it has affected your perspective, health and quality of life. Live, love and soar magnificently...and safely.

Dear Devaki, I'm not sure you remember me but we met when you lectured in Marshfield, Mass. I'd like you to know that I was very impressed-your talks were not only well organized and well documented, but also extremely easy to listen to. No easy task. I hope you are doing well and continuing to do your work. I am doing more nutrition now and less ER medicine. With best regards,

DAK, MD Boxford MA before moving to SF, NM

I was on a fishing trip with my dentist buddies. I was so burned out on practicing I was thinking of quitting dentistry. My colleagues played the tapes from your lecture on nutrition and dentistry in Clearwater Florida, while we were fishing, and it changed my life. I immediately ordered all your tapes. I became an integrative dentist that next month, because the science and delivery you gave made total sense. It changed my life, kept me in my new and improved practice, and scene the tone for personal passion and getting patients well at the core, for the rest of my career. A deep thanks!
